Students examine the approaches to treating and preventing the spread of the Great Plague in 1665. Students also compare the Great Plague with the Black Death.

The 22 slide fully resourced lesson contains activities, tasks, practice exam questions, printable resources and all background knowledge:

  • Slide 1: Title slide
  • Slide 2: Warm Up - Students think about and discuss how the authorities attenpted to stop the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020.
  • Slide 3-4: Recap - Students recap basic facts about the methods of treatment, methods to prevent the spread of and believed causes of the Black Death. This includes a printable resources as a settling in task and challenge questions.
  • Slide 5-6: Starter - Students are given 4 images of the ‘Nine Illustrations of the Great Plague’ and analyse what each image shows them about the Great Plague in London. Printable resource included.
  • Slide 7: Background information about the impact of the Great Plague
  • Slide 8-9: Task 1: Students analyse an illustrated street scene of London in 1665 to identify the ways that people tried to treat and prevent the spread of the plague. Prompt questions and answers provided with background information.
  • Slide 10: Task 2 - Students shown data linked to the death statistics and have to analyse what this teaches them.
  • Slide 11-12: Task 3 - Students are given a table containing 12 ways the authorities attempted to stop the spread of the plague. They identify which would have been effective and which wouldn’t. Includes a printable worksheet.
  • Slide 13: Task 4 - An additional worksheet with challenge/extension questions.
  • Slide 14-15: Learning Review - Students shows 8 images. They used these images to outline the methods used to stop the spread of the plague. Answers provided.
  • Slide 16: Learning Review 2 - Students complete a table outlining how the way the plague was dealt with showed progress or not from the Black Death.

  • Slide 18-19: EXAM FOCUS - Examples of the similarity and difference questions with suggested sentence starters.
