AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1A: In this lesson we look at how global atmospheric circulation (GAC) affects weather and climate.
The lesson has a weather themed retrieval practice starter. We firstly remind ourselves of the difference between weather and climate. We then look at how the curvature of the earth affects the amount of insolation received at the surface which ultimately drives the circulation cells. We then create a diagram in our books to show how a convection cells is formed and the difference between high and low pressure. We then look at the formation of wind and how the Coriolis effect deflects the direction of wind. The main task of the lesson is the students create a diagram to show GAC using a talk-ed-through presentation by the teacher which includes the convection cells, pressure zones, wind directions and areas of higher and lower cloud cover. We finish with a GCSE-style practice question with some guidance and structure provided for the students.
