These flashcards show the main geographical concept cards with images and explanations and can be used for any geography display in primary school.

The concepts selected for these cards are:

Location and Place: Location is the specific location of a particular place on Earth, answering the questions of where something is. Place describes the physical and human characteristics that give a location its identity. This includes the natural environment, human features, people, cultures, and communities that shape what a place is like and how it is experienced.
Space: The way objects, people, and environments are arranged on the Earth’s surface. It considers patterns of distribution and the relationships between different locations.
Scale: The comparative size between objects, places, and processes on Earth.
Interdependence: The mutual reliance between people, places, and environments. It enables children to explore how natural systems like the water cycle or ecosystems, and human systems such as trade or migration, depend on interconnected relationships.
Physical Processes and Physical Geography: The natural processes that shape the Earth, such as weather, rivers, volcanoes, and erosion, and the impact these processes have had on landscapes over time. Physical geography looks at the natural make-up of our world.
Human Processes and Human Geography: The way in which human activity influences and transforms environments, including urban growth, farming, industry, and climate change.

  • People, Cultures and Communities: Understanding of the practices of cultures within specific regions. Understanding of the diversity of cultures and populations within specific regions – with links to RE.
Sustainability: Finding ways to use Earth’s resources sparingly and responsibly so that these are conserved for future generations.
