GCSE citizenship taster session.
We cover Edexcel but this would work for all exam boards.
Aimed at y9 students looking to choose GCSE citizenship as an option. The session makes citizenship topics interesting, with a focus on the news and reading and debate.

Worksheet and Powerpoint included. Reading needed is within the powerpoint.
The worksheet works best printed as A3.

The presentation starts with a focus on what GCSE citizenship is. It ends with a slide of famous people who have studied politics or law at degree level.

Tasks:

  1. Newsarticle on youth crime and some reasons behind this with a focus on austerity cuts causing youth centres to close. Students then complete a multiple choice quiz on the article.
  2. Paired task - students use the 4 information sheets to look at who is to blame for youth crime; parents, the youths, the government or police.
  3. Students are decided into groups to put their strongest arguments together on their worksheet.
  4. Students prepare their arguments for oral debate in a PEEL style.
  5. Students debate ‘Who is most to blame for youth crime’. Whilst debating students write their oppositions best argument.
  6. Students answer the question to complete the worksheet and justify their view.
