A 6-week poetry scheme of work aimed at Key Stage 3 (ideally year 7 or 8) that teaches students how to analyse the poetic methods and conventions of various forms of poems. Students will also practise writing their own poetry.

Assessment task included (writing their own poem and writing an analytical commentary of their poem).

Students will explore and analyse the conventions of:

  • Ballads
  • Sonnets
  • Pastoral poetry
  • Patriotic poetry

  • Sonnet 18 - William Shakespeare
  • The Passionate Shepherd to His Love - Christopher Marlowe
  • Nightfall in the City of Hyderabad - Sarojini Naidu
  • The Hill We Climb - Amanda Gorman
  • In Flanders Fields - John McCrae
  • Talking Turkeys - Benjamin Zephaniah
