AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the 2016 specification Unit 2C, the optional unit on food management: In this sixth lesson we look at a large-scale agricultural development in Almeria, Spain and a local-scale sustainable scheme in Jamalpur, Bangladesh.
We begin with a photograph of the plastic greenhouses in Almeria, taken from space. The students have to construct some questions about the photograph using the command words in the grid. We then locate Almeria in Spain and the students write a short description using C.L.O.C.C. We then look at the nature of the development in Almeria and the students complete an exercise where they are match the reasons for the development of Almeria with an appropriate image. The students watch a video clip and answer some questions. They then complete and advantage/disadvantage grid and categorise these into social, economic and envrionmental impacts. We then turn to Jamalpur in Bangladesh. After again locating the area using C.L.O.C.C we look at what rice-fish culture farming involves. The students complete a flow chart to show how this process gets started and then complete a Venn diagram to determine how sustainable the scheme is. We then answer a 6-mark practice question with some guidance on how the answer could be structured.
