Spark thoughtful talk and early literacy with this EYFS resource based on the topic of The Natural World.
This resource promotes oracy, observation, and critical thinking through a series of PowerPoint slides and accompanying differentiated and editable worksheets.
Within the teaching PowerPoint, each slide features three vivid images that prompt children to explore, compare, and decide which feels like the odd one out, encouraging open-ended dialogue with no fixed answers.
Children are guided to share what they notice, offer reasoning, and develop language as they participate in collaborative conversations. Embedded clickable icons provide interactive extensions including topic-related fun facts, teacher questioning prompts, and differentiated words for sounding out and blending together (from simple CVC to words containing digraphs).
This pack includes a series of differentiated follow-on worksheets designed to help children express their thinking through writing. Each worksheet is available in editable formats, as well as PDF, with both landscape and portrait layout options to suit your classroom needs.
The Odd One Out activity supports the following ELGs:
Listening, Attention and Understanding
- Listen attentively and respond to what they hear with relevant questions,
comments and actions when being read to and during whole class discussions
and small group interactions. - Make comments about what they have heard and ask questions to clarify their
understanding. - Hold conversation when engaged in back-and-forth exchanges with their
teacher and peers.
Speaking - Participate in small group, class and one-to-one discussions, offering their
own ideas, using recently introduced vocabulary. - Express their ideas and feelings about their experiences using full sentences,
including use of past, present and future tenses and making use of
conjunctions, with modelling and support from their teacher.
Word Reading - Read words consistent with their phonic knowledge by sound-blending.
