Learning about fractions can be a tricky concept for students, especially if they aren’t secure with multiplication and division facts. These fraction task cards are designed to support learners in finding unit fractions of amounts and then progressing to non unit fractions of amounts, using concrete materials to help with calculations.

There are 9 coloured and 9 black and white A4 task cards to download (pdf) giving you the freedom to laminate and create math centers or use individually for work books and working walls. The fraction cards do from ½ up to 10/10 There are also 30 amount cards and a directions card in the lack.

Using a range of everyday classroom objects such as, cubes, buttons, counters, Pom poms, Lego bricks etc, children gather the materials to match the amount on their card. They then split them equally according to the denominator on their task card. Once they’ve completed this, they will then be able to recognise, count and calculate non unit fractions of the amount. This is a great way to support learners who are still struggling with multiplication and division tasks.

One way I’d use these in my classroom is to then take photographs of the completed task cards to create a valuable and meaningful fraction working wall.

These would be ideal as differentiated tasks, early finishing tasks, small group support, individual investigation, interventions and as a whole class demonstration (enlarge to A3) or homeschooling. It’s a versatile resource to help youngsters become more confident and successful in grasping fractions!
