Initially designed to be used completely independently as an easy ‘pick-up and put down’ activity during the very busy end of year period. The content

  • Planning sheet 1 - outline of story with brief summary of plot. Step 1; design a world. Featuring suggestions, boxes to fill in with details such as “what living beings live there” and “what jobs do people do”. Children may choose an underwater kingdom, a far away planet in space or something totally different. The first planning sheet ends with sentence starters and a space to write a short setting description.

  • Planning sheet 2 - character creation. Featuring a number of prompts and requirements for extra details like transport and sidekick.

  • 5 chapter writing sheets - Each begins with a short description of the main events of that part such as going on a journey, facing a villain etc. There are also question prompts for the child to think about. Each chapter has a list of ‘skills’ that best suit that chapter (year group appropriate that should be embedded but may require extra practice such as expanded noun phrases, adverbs etc)

  • 1 plain, lined sheet of paper for the purposes of printing on both sides of the paper. Simply duplicate and place in between chapter pages for high ability/prolific writers; you know your children, tweak and modify as needed.

  • Suggested use; featuring a 10 day sequence of suggested lessons and multiple ways the resource can be used as the basis of lesson planning, assessed writing or simply a fun activity when timetables are disturbed by end of term fun.

  • ALL MGLearntogether resources are formatted in line with the BDA’s dyslexia friendly recommendations with dyslexia friendly font, spacing and organisational features. This not only benefits those estimated 10% of children with dyslexic tendencies, but all children and indeed adults; providing a comfortable reading experience for all. These resources can also be printed on coloured paper.

  • Low cost printing - in addition, considering our current climate of under funding, the resource has been thoughtfully created using grey rather than black for lines, boxes and table outlines.

In my experience, children are brilliant at thinking up vocabulary, expanded noun phrases, thinking imaginatively and including their year group skills. However, the hardest thing to learn is structure. This resource gives them a chance to simply create without the puzzle and pressure of structuring their story. I hope you and the childre
