
This lesson continues on from the EDUQAS GCSE COMP 2, MUSIC VIDS (SEC B) 2024 ONWARDS: MUSIC VIDEO CODES & CONVENTIONS WORKSHOP and is a TRIPLE lesson (LESSON 4-6) ON TLC’s ‘Waterfalls’ music video. This lesson focuses on:
-Context behind the band and their socially aware message.
-A ‘Behind-the-scenes’ video on the making of the video.
-Performative, Narrative and Experimental music vides and application to the music video.
-The codes and conventions of Hip-Hop and R&B and how TLC both adhered/ subverted this.
-The ‘Video Vixen’ trope.
-Direct/ indirect interxtuality and homage.
-Iconography within the music videos and the use of motif.
-The deeper menaing/ connotations of ‘Waterfalls’ with embedded audio/visual.
-Application of narrative theories (Barthes, Claude Levi- Strauss, Propp and Todorov)
-Camera angles/ shots, composistion and framing with a task that requires students to create their own shot list based on audio/visual stimulus from studio binder.
-The exploration and peer breakdown task of the following question, alongside a colour-coded inside my brain slide that runs through how I would answer this question:
- How far does Waterfalls (second music video we have studied) challenge the conventions of music videos?
In your response, you must:
• explore examples from the two music videos you have studied
• refer to relevant media contexts
• make judgements and draw conclusions.
-Embeeded video to aid students with one of their H/W tasks.
NOTE: I am following EDUQAS Teaching Model 1 in my teaching/ SOW and my school is only providing Media Studies at GCSEl, as a three-year Course. Moreover, some of the tasks in lesson and for H/W are dependent upon owning the EDUQAS GCSE Revision Guide from Illumination Publishing.
