This worksheet guides the student through two different approaches to this question. The aim is to help students achieve the detached critical judgement of a Level 5 - as well as evaluating the techniques of the writer.

Nicely laid out resource, with good texts to annotate however I feel that the guidance on how to answer this question is inaccurate. In the resource, it references that the students should refer to Language and Structure to complete question 4 (evaluation of a text) - This is inaccurate as students need to refer to Setting, ideas, themes and events - as per the edexcel mark scheme.

I appreciate your point. Thank you for the comments. My idea is that approaching the question as settings, ideas, themes and events there is a danger of being descriptive - unless the student can write in conceptual terms easily. To gain marks on the writer's intention the student still needs to explore writer's choices at the sentence and word level - therefore, analysis of language and structure to reveal ideas about the bigger ideas being evaluated. I hope this makes sense.
