Teach pupils about the use of literary devices and figurative language in Frank Cottrell-Boyce’s novel Cosmic using these four activities with differentiation.

The novel is full of literary devices such as similes, metaphors and personification. Examples of these and more are explored to give pupils a deeper understanding of the text and of the techniques.

Literary devices and figurative language examples are explored in the following activities:
• Literary Device Match (differentiated x3): pupils match the literary devices with their definitions and examples (ideal as a paired or small group activity). Answers included.
• Completing Similes: pupils match the beginning and end of the simile sentences. Answers included.
• Identifying Literary Devices (differentiated x3): pupils find and underline listed literary devices used in various extracts from the book. Answers included.
• Simile and Metaphor Meanings (differentiated x3): pupils explain the meanings, or match the meanings, of the similes and metaphors from the novel. Answers included.
