What is sustainability? Are biofuels carbon neutral? Are hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen fuel engines good alternatives to fossil fuels? All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 12 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 1 – WCH11, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. The breakdown of the slides (which are best opened on Microsoft PowerPoint) is as follows:

Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time. The key word for the lesson, sustainable, is displayed here with the definition
Slide 2 - Lesson objectives (see thumbnail image)
Slide 3 – Hinge question: Why are people concerned with fossil fuels?
Slide 4 – Answers to slide 4 question
Slide 5 – Another hinge question: What are the alternatives?
Slides 6 – 8: Information on bioethanol, including fermentation process and chemical equations
Slides 9 - 14: This section of the lesson is all about carbon neutrality. On slide 10, be sure to use the notes section to explain carbon neutrality with the diagram on the screen
Slides 15 – 18: Two children, Lance and Mara, debate the deeper meaning of carbon neutrality and whether any fuel is actually carbon neutral. Use students in your class as narrators to read Lance’s and Mara’s parts
Slides 19 – 20: Points to consider when comparing fuels, including a handy mnemonic that we made up (Let Your Monkeys and Tigers Chat!)
Slides 21 – 22: Worked Example – compare bioethanol and natural gas
Slides 23 – 28: Mini plenary exam questions (included with resource). Answers are in the word document and also in the PowerPoint
Slides 29 – 33: Discussion of hydrogen as an alternative fuel, including its advantages and disadvantages
Slides 34 – 41: Exam questions with mark scheme answers (included with the purchase of this resource)
