What is an addition polymer? How do you draw the repeat unit from a monomer? What is incineration? What is a biodegradable polymer? What is recycling? All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 12 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 1 – WCH11, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. The breakdown of the slides (which are best opened on Microsoft PowerPoint) is as follows:
Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time. The key word for the lesson, sustainable, is displayed here with the definition
Slide 2 - Lesson objectives (see thumbnail image)
Slide 3 – Definition of polymer
Slide 4 – Natural polymers and their monomers
Slides 5 – 6: Reminder of addition reactions to help students make the link to addition polymers
Slides 7 – 9: Addition polymerisation reactions with worked examples of how to write the repeat units and structures
Slide 10 – Worked example: Drawing a length of a polymer with a specified number of repeat units
Slide 11 – Worked example: Drawing a monomer from a polymer chain
Slides 12 – 13: Independent practice worksheet with answers (included with purchase)
Slide 14 – Polymer waste placeholder slide
Slide 15 – Key words + definitions (recycling, incineration, and biodegradable)
Slide 16 – Hinge question: two images of children’s bedrooms, one is clearly modern, with many plastic fittings, and the other is very old with a lot of wooder finishing. Students are asked the difference between the two rooms.
Slides 17 – 19: Class reading. Nominate 5 readers and let each read a paragraph. Let the discussion flow naturally
Slide 20 – Discussion point: MdDonald’s and other large restaurants stopped serving plastic straws in the UK since 2018
Slide 21 – Discussion point: In some countries, customers must pay for plastic bags in supermarkets
Slide 22 – List of solutions to polymer waste – students to make notes
Slides 23 – 24: Pros and cons of incineration and biodegradable polymers
Slides 25 – 31: Exam questions with mark scheme answers (included with the purchase of this resource)
