This 4-page printable resource helps children explore 30 words containing the “wh” letter pattern. Most words begin with “wh” (e.g. whistle, whale, where), while others include “wh” within them (e.g. narwhal, blowhole). Children will practise recognising both the sound and meaning, with some requiring deeper thinking and symbol matching.
Words include a mix of:
• Questions (who, when, where, what, why, which)
• Objects/Animals (whistle, wheels, whiskers, whale, whisk, whip)
• Descriptive and compound words (whopper, blowhole, whacky)
Children are encouraged to think about the meaning of trickier words such as whopper (look for something large) and who (symbol for question and person). Children can work together for trickier words.
Page 1: Full-colour symbol grid with all 30 “wh” words (featuring licensed Boardmaker symbols).
Page 2: Black-and-white version for colouring and visual scanning.
Page 3: Write and list activity – children write or tick off “wh” words they find.
Page 4: Answer sheet listing all 30 words for checking and matching.
Learning Focus:
• Phonics: Recognising the “wh” sound in different word contexts
• Building understanding of question words, objects, and descriptive vocabulary
• Symbol association and vocabulary sorting
