This is a quick lesson with an exemplar formal letter for English language paper 2, question 5.
‘Petrol and diesel vehicles are destroying the environment. They should be banned so we can clean up the planet.’
Write a letter to the Minister for Transport explaining your point of view on this view.
There is a PowerPoint with a ‘Do now’ activity, the model question, a slide on approaches to plan the answer, a slide on suggested topics the students could cover based on an AQA Examiners Report and a model letter the students can read and analyse while considering WWW/EBI. The model is good but not absolutely perfect which is important for students to see. However, it does contain a good clear structure with an opening, four main ideas and a conclusion. There are also some key methods used for the students to identify including rhetorical questions, an extended metaphor and some lists of three. The writer also identifies the audience throughout and this might help students in their own writing.
This is an ideal lesson for Year 11 students preparing for their English language exam as they can compare this exemplar to their own writing. It has been used in lessons and works well for middle to upper ability students.
