I Love my Earth! A creative way to teach environmental education for Earth Day. Decorate your classroom and teach your kiddos about the beauty and wonder of our Earth. Whether hanging from the ceiling or sitting on the shelf, your students will love creating and putting on their own personal touches on these unique Earth Day Globes. Paper lanterns are great for developing fine motor skills such as: folding, coloring, painting, gluing, cutting, listening and following directions. Embedded within this Earth Day project there are several activities to extend your students learning about the Earth. These units are designed in a Mix and Match format. You are able to pick the pieces that you want, depending on the needs and the abilities of your students…so many possibilities. There are many ways to create these World lanterns using glitter, paper layering, leaves, shredded paper, tissue paper or garbage collected from around the playground. This unit can be approached in several ways. Either as a quick Earth Day project that will take about 90 minutes to complete. Or as long, in-depth project that will take upwards of a week to complete. In my classroom, creating the basic lantern will take my kiddos about 90 minutes (coloring and assembly). Adding on each Heart will take an additional 45 to 60 minute block of time. I normally read an Earth storybook for my Kiddos. We create one heart for each Earth related book, writing and drawing one element that is important. I use this Earth Day project as the center piece for my Environmental Education for Earth Day. Included: • Printed World lantern templates • Numerous Earth Day trim slogans • Beautiful Hearts ….check out the preview to see everything included!

Science- Earth & Space- Day and Night Year 5

In this lesson students will work towards the objective: use the idea of the Earth’s rotation to explain day and night and the apparent movement of the sun across the sky. They will first learn about how our understanding of day and night has changed over time before understanding the science behind the suns ‘apparent’ movement across the sky. They will also learn how sundials work before explaining what they have learnt on the activity sheet. They will then learn about the seasons and the science behind the concentration of the sun’s energy on the Earth’s surface. They will be taught how this links to time zones and again will explain their understanding through the activity sheet. The engaging presentation- with links to online video clips and the activity sheets are all provided. A knowledge organiser for Earth & Space is also included. This lesson is intended for Year 5 students but can easily be modified for all KS2 and KS3 students. This lesson is 1/6 lessons on Earth & Space.
