Why did a Native Nation help Ireland during its darkest hour?

This inspiring comprehension pack explores the real-life story of generosity between the Choctaw Nation and the Irish people. From hunger and hardship to modern acts of solidarity, students will uncover how one remarkable gift created a friendship that still matters today.
The Starter text focuses on clear facts and simple sentence structures, helping learners build confidence in retrieval, sequencing, and vocabulary in context. The Standard version builds on this with more varied language and structure, encouraging pupils to make inferences and consider viewpoint. The Stretch version uses abstract vocabulary and layered meaning to develop higher-level thinking, including evaluation, justification, and author’s intent.
Across all three levels, students will learn that in 1847, the Choctaw Nation sent $170 to help those suffering in Ireland. This act of kindness came just sixteen years after the Choctaw had been forced from their own lands during the Trail of Tears. A sculpture in Ireland now celebrates this connection, and in 2020, Irish donors gave back to Native American communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The story is remembered today as a powerful symbol of empathy and shared humanity.
