How is Pentecost Shown Through Art? | Year 7 Catholic RE Lesson – KS3
This fully resourced Year 7 lesson explores the meaning and impact of Pentecost by examining how artists have used colour, light, symbols, and expression to share this powerful moment in the life of the Church. Aligned with the KS3 Religious Education Directory (RED) and Source & Summit, the lesson helps pupils understand how the Holy Spirit is represented in Christian art and why Pentecost remains a key event for Catholics today.
Written for pupils with a reading age of around 10, the lesson includes simple definitions of key terms, corrects common misconceptions (e.g. the Holy Spirit is not an angel), and features accessible art analysis and guided questioning. Pupils study two contrasting artworks—one by Elizabeth Wang and one from the Life of Jesus Mafa series—to explore how different cultures and styles communicate the same spiritual truth.
Engaging activities, image-led discussion, and a PEEL writing task allow pupils to reflect on how art can deepen faith and bring Bible stories to life.
Ideal for Catholic RE teachers looking for a creative, thoughtful, and scaffolded lesson that builds understanding of Pentecost and the power of religious art.
