**What Happened at the Council of Jerusalem? | Year 7 Catholic RE Lesson – KS3
**
This fully resourced Year 7 lesson helps pupils understand the events of the Council of Jerusalem and why it was such a turning point for the early Church. Linked to the Dialogue and Encounter strand of the KS3 RED curriculum, the lesson explains how early Church leaders, like Peter and Paul, worked together to answer big questions about who could become a Christian and how to keep the growing Church united.

Using simplified language for pupils with a reading age of around 10, the lesson introduces key terms like gentile, council, dialogue, and ecumenical council, with clear definitions and one misconception per word to help pupils deepen their understanding.

The lesson includes rephrased biblical texts, quotes from Acts and Galatians, and activities that explore the impact of Church decisions on faith today. Pupils are encouraged to think about how the Church listens, debates, and makes choices for the good of all Christians.

With illustrated timelines, comprehension questions, and engaging discussion points, this lesson helps pupils see how councils like Jerusalem helped shape the universal Church we know today.

Perfect for Catholic RE teachers wanting an inclusive, structured, and thought-provoking way to explore the Church’s teaching role and decision-making through real-life examples of faith, unity, and dialogue.
