Writing frame for guided writing
Early Years (EYFS) / Key Stage 1 (KS1) / Key Stage 2 (KS2)
Information, instruction, story, creative and all writing activities
This writing frame is ideal for a guided writing activity across the key stages. The resource includes a pre-written dinosaur themed sentence, suitable for a dinosaur topic “They are herbivores with a long neck.” there are 6 sentences, great for guided reading/writing with a small, lower ability group.
- Separate the sentences and give 1 to each child.
- Have each child point to each word as you read it aloud - see if they can spot your tricky words or sounds they know.
- Read it together again, pointing to each word.
- Cut the sentence up as they read each word.
- The children stick the sentence back in the correct order on the writing template - looking for clues like the capital letter, full stop, tricky words and familiar sounds.
- Choose a title to copy or write their own at the top.
- Independently, children draw a picture of the dinosaur in the space.
To differentiate, children can reorder it as a group, or write the sentence instead of cutting it up. To challenge: can they write their own additional sentence about the dinosaur?
Re-use the writing frame for all your writing activities! Suitable for instruction, information and story writing too.
This prints as a PDF in A4 size. You can increase the size to A3 to create and “teacher copy” to model the activity.
