PowerPoint (with 4 slides) and three Word Documents that considers how tolerant were the Tudors. It covers some examples of black Tudors, Elizabethan slave trading, relations with the Muslim world, and xenophobia towards foreigners. This lesson is best delivered at the end of a Tudor scheme of work as it makes reference to all the Tudor monarchs so some awareness of the broad chronology of the period is advisable.

Activities include

  • Source analysis of the Westminster Tournament Roll to identify John Blanke and establish the diverse nature of Tudor society.
  • Matching exercise on Tudor England’s relationship with the wider world; Catholic Europe, Russia, India, West Africa, Protestant Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
  • Source analysis of eight sources to identify if the Tudors were tolerant or not; sources include Francis Drake’s relationships with various black people, Dutch Protestant refugees in London, trading relations and diplomatic relations with Morocco. Best done as group work.
  • Plenary scoring exercise on how tolerant were the Tudors of different races, religions, genders and nationalities.
  • Extension question on the role of economics.
