This is a lovely short story with props, however it is not a sensory story and I would not say it is suitable for children working at the P levels, particularly not the lower P levels. The resources include holding or looking at objects/pictures and do not provide any sensory feedback for the children. A sensory story should try to engage a range of senses (touch, taste, olfactory (smell), auditory (sound), visual, proprioception (body awareness) and vestibular (movement). Imagine you were blindfolded- feeling a toy horse or donkey. What would you think it was- a dog, a cow? You may well figure out that it was a horse but it would be unlikely to be your first guess! This task would be near impossible for a child working at low P levels. However, if you were to hear coconut shells tapping together it would create animmediately recognisable 'clip-clop' sound; a much more meaningful sensory experience. I would highly recommend that you look at the work of Jo Grace founder of the Sensory Story project (among many other things!) http://jo.element42.org/home . She provides lots of great free resources, examples of sensory stories, as well as information on how to create a sensory story.

I have had a go at adapting this story to make it more of a sensory experience and of course it can be adapted further. You can find it in my resources. I hope it is useful!
