
In this unit, students will explore the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) to understand how emerging economies shape global development. Through the lens of human and physical geography, students will investigate unique opportunities and challenges each country faces. They will examine key issues such as natural resource management, urbanisation, inequality, and the role of transnational corporations (TNCs). The unit includes lesson, assesments and homeworks.
Lessons include:
L1 - Introduction to the BRICS
L2 - Brazil - Natural resources exploitation.
L3 - Russia - Natural gas (includes slides acknowledging the Russia / Ukraine war but only briefly and can be excluded although questions always arise during the lesson).
L4 - India - Inequality in Mumbai
L5 - China - Migration / Urbanisation
L6- South Africa - Diamonds and decisions (Debeer’s new diamond mine should it have gone ahead?
L7-8 -BRICS and TNC’s (TNCs mentioned throughout topic but focused on in this lesson)
Students will develop key geographical skills, including map interpretation (in Lesson 2-7), data presentation (choropleth and GIS mapping), and decision-making based on evidence. By the end of the unit, students will have a clearer understanding of the varied pathways recent countries have taken to develop and how these shape the modern world.
