Spelling Choices for ‘ae’ (ay, ai, ei, eigh, ey, ea) is a KS1 and SEND resource using licensed Boardmaker symbols to help children to recognise and choose the correct spellings.
The pack includes 12 worksheets organised into 4 sets; each sheet shows 8 symbols with space underneath for writing.
Sheet 1 (colour): children write the word under each symbol, selecting from the two spelling options for that set.
Sheet 2 (black and white): the same sheet for colouring, and spelling.
Sheet 3 (black and white): dotted words for tracing and colouring to support handwriting — a differentiated step.
Set focus:
Set 1/2 contrasts ay (as in May, day, play) with ai (as in train, rain, brain);
Set 3 contrasts ei (as in reindeer, vein) with eigh (as in sleigh, weigh);
Set 4 contrasts ey (as in grey, obey) with ea (as in steak, break);
