This teaching unit is designed to prepare papers 1 and 3 for the topic of African immigration to Spain. The aim is for students to discover the migration routes, involving irregular crossings to the Canary Islands and the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla and the dangers they face during the trip. Based on real journalistic texts I created the following exam-style questions:
• Three reading comprehension questions about migration routes, migration flows, buffer states, crossing points and the unstable political situation of Sahel countries.
• A speaking photo card about Melilla’s fence.
• A translation task from English to Spanish.
• Answer key is included.
Teachers can teach the content in class ( PowerPoint of 18 slides) and students can also practise the exam independently.
