This easy-to-use document maps out the progression of physical education skills across primary school using clear and child-friendly “I can” statements. Each year group builds upon the previous one, supporting a structured development of physical literacy from early movement to complex game strategies.

The skills are colour-coded into key areas of PE to show clear learning journeys across:

Locomotion and Agility (e.g., running, jumping, dodging) – Blue

Object Control (e.g., throwing, catching, striking) – Green

Balance and Coordination – Orange

Teamwork and Communication – Purple

Tactical Thinking and Strategy – Red

Personal Fitness and Wellbeing – Yellow

This format allows teachers to easily assess, plan, and report on children’s physical development. It also supports inclusion, differentiation, and whole-school PE planning by making progression visible and achievable for all learners.
