This 5-lesson Religious Education unit for KS2 introduces the concept of pilgrimage and how it is understood in different faiths. Pupils will learn why certain places are considered special and explore the meaning and symbolism behind pilgrimages in Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism. Lessons are fully planned and resourced with PowerPoints, differentiated activities, and texts.

★ Lesson Overview / Structure:

★ Lesson 1 – Why Are Places Special?
Pupils reflect on special places in their own lives and explain why they matter. They begin to understand the idea of sacred places and spiritual journeys.

★ Lesson 2 – Pilgrimage to Lourdes (Christianity)
Pupils learn about the story of Saint Bernadette and why Christians visit Lourdes. They read the story and use discussion and questioning to explore beliefs.

★ Lesson 3 – Hajj to Mecca (Islam)
This lesson introduces the Five Pillars of Islam, focusing on Hajj. Pupils use information texts, photographs and key vocabulary to understand what happens during Hajj and why it is important.

★ Lesson 4 – Hindu Pilgrimages (Varanasi, Ayodhya, Vrindavan)
Children learn about symbolic places in Hinduism, using rich texts and a travel guide template to show their understanding of the purpose and meaning of pilgrimage.

★ Lesson 5 – Sikh Pilgrimage to the Golden Temple (Amritsar)
Pupils explore the importance of Amritsar and the Golden Temple in Sikhism. They use a PowerPoint, discussion prompts and follow-up activities to summarise their learning across the unit.
