Year 2 Writing Focus: Exploring Omar the Bees and Me and Writing About Honey Cake
In Year 2, children will be reading the delightful story Omar the Bees and Me, where they’ll discover the important role bees play in the world. As we explore the book, our writing lessons will focus on improving key skills such as:
Conjunctions: Linking ideas in our sentences, using words like and, but, and because.
Suffixes: Adding endings like -ing, -ed, and -ly to words to create new meanings.
Sentence Openers: Starting sentences in different ways to make our writing more exciting.
Expanded Noun Phrases: Describing nouns with extra detail (e.g., the fluffy yellow cake).
Contractions: Using shortened forms like don’t, isn’t, and can’t in our writing.
Writing Outcome:
Children will use their new skills to write clear and creative instructions on how to make a honey cake, just like the one in the story! They will carefully structure their writing to help others follow the steps easily.
Incidental Write:
In addition to their main writing task, children will create a fact file about bee farming, sharing interesting facts about bees and how honey is made. This will give them a chance to use their research skills and apply the writing techniques we’ve been practicing.
Let’s get ready to buzz into some fantastic writing!
