This resource is materials for an entire lesson that is suitable for 1st years (12-13 year olds) to learn about letter writing, as well as looking at a specific example of a letter sent by a former slave to their old master when he was asked to return to work after being freed!

These resources consist of a powerpoint slide introducing students to the unique format of letters, an example of a letter, and also the letter mentioned above. The class is designed to last for one class lasting for one hour, but could potentially be used for 2 one hour classes. The class will focus upon looking at the key skills of critical thinking, analysis, improving literacy, and working in pairs. A link can also be formed with the history department due to the historical nature of the letter. By partaking in this module students will learn and appreciate the format of letters looking at both an example of formal and informal writing.

Included is the powerpoint slide for this lesson, as well as the two example letters. These example letters are in two formats with the other being in comic sans if required.
