New online service coming soon with FREE downloads (including this resource) available! For more information visit

What’s included?
This download includes x24 A4, pdf sheets (portrait) to practise handwriting all lowercase letter sounds (graphemes) in Phase 3 (phonics) - this includes sounds j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ng, ch, sh, th, ai, ee, ie, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er.

What’s it for?
This resource has been designed to enable learners to practise handwriting the fifth set for phase 3 phonics letters - ear, air, ure, er (this is the last/ninth set in the ‘phonics handwriting set’ - which begins with phase 2 sounds). Learners are guided where to write with a starting dot and grey letter shape to follow. The four different sheets vary in level of support and challenge provided making it easy for adults to select just the right level to match each learners ability. Learners could begin at sheet 1 and revisit these letters working through sheets 2 - 4 which incrementally provide less support yet more challenge each time.

Who’s it for?
This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support.

Resource details
This activity has been designed to write straight on. Letters include ‘starting dots’ so learners know where to place their pencil to begin and dots on top of letters guide where to write.

  • x9 sets
There are nine sets in the same design for all of the letters in Phase 2/3, x5 sets for phase 3…
  • Set 5 includes sounds j v w x y z
  • Set 6 includes sounds zz qu ng ch sh th
  • Set 7 includes sounds ai, ee, igh, oa, oo
  • Set 8 includes sounds ar, or, ur, ow, oi
  • Set 9 includes sounds ear, air, ure, er

All sets include four sheets, each numbered and each slightly differently according to the design and level that best suits your learner/s. The numbers 1 - 4 (at the top of each sheet) and the cover image left to right shows the levels in order of easiest (1 - most support, less challenge) to hardest (4 - least support, more challenge).

There are four sheets included, slightly different in design and level of challenge/support provided, though each sheet is numbered 1 - 4 (at the top of each sheet). These numbers (and the cover image) left to right indicate the levels in order of easiest to hardest. Sheet 1 provides the most support with the least amount of challenge, sheet 4 provides the least amount of support with the most challenge. The different designs makes it easier to select the level that best suits your learner/s.
