Word searches are a simple and effective way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. The sets focus on nombres de zéro à dix / zéro à vingt et un, each featuring ten differentiated word searches, with an increasing level of challenge.

Grids 1 / 2 feature French number word prompts and French responses in the grid. Students also complete a list of corresponding translations in English for additional consolidation. Grids 3 / 4 feature digit prompts such as 0, 3, 9, and students look for the corresponding word in French in the grid. Grid 5 features numbers with gaps, such as *** f*** , and students have to work out what the number is in order to find it in the grid. They also have to complete the French word list for additional practice in spelling. Grids 6 / 7 have English number word prompts. Students translate the numbers into French, and then look for them in the grid. Grids 8 / 9 / 10 have calculations as prompts, for example deux + cinq. Students work out the response, write it in French in the list, and then look for it in the grid. Differentiating the search challenges in this way makes the activity more comprehensive and engaging than a straightforward French numbers vocabulary exercise.

Each grid is in landscape format, and has an accompanying answer key so that students can check their own responses. There is a French number reference list which students find really helpful to consolidate numbers and spelling.

This kind of activity is really versatile, and useful in a range of learning contexts, not only during the time where numbers are the current language focus: use individual grids as bell ringers / starters, fun-time fillers, finishers or for sub / cover lessons at any time of the school year. Students benefit from revisiting the word searches over several weeks until they are absolutely confident with the range of vocabulary.
