Flowers for Algernon synopsis:
Told through the progress reports of Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled man with an I.Q. of 70. Charlie undergoes experimental surgery to increase his intelligence. Charlie’s journey, from a naive, eager learner in night school, studying Robinson Crusoe, and working as a custodian in a factory, to a brilliant, yet isolated individual after the surgery. Charles newly-acquired intelligence causes people who were once close to him to now exclude him. His coworkers sign a peition to have him fired and the scientists involved in his surgery avoid Charlie when he begins to know more than they do.
Flowers for Algernon explores themes of intelligence, identity, and the ethical considerations of experimental scientific advancements on individuals who cannot fully advocate for themself. Will the operation be a success for Charlie, or will it have draw backs? Find out in the Flowers for Algernon Readers’ Theatre Unit!
Mr. Marvel’s Musings:
A colleague requested the short story. There is a novel, but I will only adapt that if it is requested. My colleague and I feel that the short story is more efficient while the novel adds many details that do not always make the story better.
Charle speaks a lot in this story because he is writing entries and reports about his progress.
I hope you, and your students enjoy reading Flowers for Algernon and continue to do so for many years.
Excelsior!
