This Creative Writing booklet has been carefully designed to support students in developing their own imaginative and technically skilled writing within the fantasy genre. Structured as a progressive anthology, the booklet presents a selection of short extracts from published and adapted fantasy texts.
The booklet is divided into five core sections, each focused on a fundamental element of fantasy storytelling:
Introduction to Fantasy Writing: Explores the conventions, imaginative scope, and purpose of fantasy as a genre, using opening paragraphs and narrative hooks to engage readers and establish tone.
Fantasy Settings: Provides vivid descriptive passages that model the creation of immersive, otherworldly environments, encouraging students to consider atmosphere, sensory detail, and world-building.
Character Creation: Offers examples of striking protagonists, antagonists, and mythical creatures, examining how writers develop personality, motivation, and archetype through language and detail.
Creating Tension: Analyses how writers build suspense and uncertainty, focusing on techniques such as pacing, foreshadowing, and viewpoint to maintain reader engagement.
Conflict and Action: Presents dynamic scenes of conflict and explores how writers choreograph action and reflect its impact on character and plot.
Each section encourages active engagement: students are prompted to read and annotate the extracts using guiding questions, followed by targeted writing tasks that allow them to experiment with and apply the techniques explored. These tasks gradually build students’ confidence and skill, leading towards the composition of a full-length fantasy narrative by the end of the unit.
