Year 9 Lesson – The Aims of Punishment: Why Do We Punish?

Aims:

Understand the three main aims of punishment: deterrence, retribution, and reformation

Explore whether punishment is about revenge, justice, or change

Examine religious and ethical perspectives on how and why we punish offenders

This lesson includes a retrieval quiz, gap-fill and matching activities, guided reading on the aims of punishment, discussion of examples and case studies, and reflection on the parable of the Prodigal Son. It finishes with a structured debate about the purpose of punishment.
