**12 Times Tables - Multiplication and Division, worksheet / test.**
Achieving fluency for mastery- pupils who regularly perform this activity against the clock not only increase their attainment level but also increase their ability to rapidly recall all the times tables multiplication facts up to 12x12. This is a great tool for implementing Rosenshines principle of repetition with spaced, interleaved, retrieval practice.
I model how to place the larger digit in their head and to count on. Initially they will need support and exposure to the facts in approx 30 minutes per session. Over the weeks you will start to see more questions answered at a greater speed, as well as, some retrieval from memory. the longer it is in place the more retrieval occurs. I have seen pupils who started with less than 50 in 20 minutes, end up with 144 in under 4 minutes.
For division I teach the pupils how to efficiently re-use their multiplication facts to calculate the division facts using fact families. This reduces the need to learn so many facts.

Stages of reaching fluency for mastery
1) Using concrete objects in arrays as 1:1 representations - cubes, counters.
2) Learning individual times tables as a list of answers with their questions.
3) Learning how to re-use the multiplication facts to find the related division facts within the fact family.
4) Short-term memory - answers retrieved from recent exposure, usually involves delayed responses. Pupils now begin to recall systematic lists of individual times tables.
5) Long-term memory - answers are now retrieved over a longer period of time but often still have delays in locating the facts. Pupils begin to recall random facts from the memorised lists.
6) Automation - all answers are now retrieved instantly without any delays or calculations, including related division facts. Pupils now have an empty working-memory when performing more complex reasoning tasks.
