**What Do the Genesis Creation Stories Teach About Human Life? **

This fully resourced Year 9 lesson explores what the two Genesis creation accounts (Genesis 1 and 2) teach Catholics about the value, purpose, and dignity of human life. Aligned with the KS3 Religious Education Directory (RED) and supporting GCSE study, the lesson helps pupils understand key Catholic beliefs about humans being made imago Dei, having a soul, and being given dominion and responsibility for creation.

Written for pupils with a reading age of around 10, the lesson includes simple one-sentence definitions of keywords, corrects common misconceptions (e.g. imago Dei does not mean humans look like God), and uses engaging scaffolds to build knowledge. Pupils study and compare the two accounts, with structured comprehension tasks, accessible source analysis, and a PEEL writing activity to support extended responses.

Creative activities such as role-on-the-wall and debate posters allow pupils to show understanding independently, while clipart visuals and glossaries keep content clear and engaging. The lesson also develops evaluative skills, as pupils consider arguments for and against the statement “Humans are God’s most important creation,” using direct quotations from Genesis.

Ideal for Catholic RE teachers seeking a thoughtful, scaffolded, and exam-focused resource that deepens pupils’ knowledge of Scripture and Catholic teaching on human life.
