How Can Art Teach About the Resurrection? | Year 8 Catholic RE Lesson – KS3

This fully resourced Year 8 lesson explores how Christian art helps us understand and reflect on the Resurrection of Jesus. Focusing on the work of Sadao Watanabe (Japan) and Caravaggio (Italy), pupils examine how artists from different cultures show the meaning and mystery of the Resurrection through style, symbolism, and emotion.

Aligned with the KS3 Religious Education Directory (RED) and Source & Summit, the lesson helps pupils see how faith is expressed in visual form and how art can teach key Catholic beliefs such as new life, transformation, and hope.

Designed for pupils with a reading age of around 10, the lesson includes clear definitions of key terms (e.g. icon, iconography, Resurrection), corrects common misconceptions (e.g. that the disciples immediately recognised Jesus), and uses powerful visual examples to guide interpretation.

Engaging tasks include visual analysis, comparing artworks, identifying symbolism, and reflecting on what each piece reveals about Jesus’ resurrection and Christian belief today.

Perfect for Catholic RE teachers looking for an inclusive, creative, and thought-provoking lesson that brings theology to life through global art and storytelling.
