This pack contains resources for the delivery of a fun and engaging extended cultural project for native Spanish speakers learning English as a foreign language at intermediate and upper-intermediate level. In this exciting topic, students will work together to write and narrate their own pieces of creative writing in the Gothic style, building their confidence and command of the English language in the process.

I taught this topic to students ranging from 1º ESO to 4º ESO (KS3-4) in Spain, to great effect. Students of all abilities enjoyed and enthusiastically engaged with the content.

Learning Objectives:

  • For students to develop their descriptive language, particularly relating to places and people

  • For students to develop their narrative expression and storytelling, particularly in the past tense

  • For students to engage with and build an appreciation for different literary styles

  • For students to develop their confidence in speaking, by narrating a story with expression and emotion

The topic can be stretched out over 4-5 lessons, ideally culminating in students sharing their original creative writing pieces. Given the challenge of the project, it is recommended that students work in groups.

There is plenty of room for differentiation with this topic. For my younger or less proficient students, I tasked them to write a short chapter, instead of a full story, or for others, to to write out a detailed, descriptive passage about a character or setting.
