Are you looking for a fun, interactive way of improving your students’ rhythm reading and playing? Classroom Samba bands are great for getting everyone playing in time and confidently recognising rhythms! Use any percussion instruments (or bucket drums or even just clapping) and play through this short, 5-section samba. This lesson is zero-prep and requires no technology except your whiteboard screen.

Tell me more!
This piece uses call & response, ostinatos and imitation to get students playing rhythms as a class and in smaller groups.
Each rhythm has a short autumn-themed phrase to help students learn it (think pumpkin-spiced lattes and falling leaves) - plus, audio clips demonstrate each new rhythm!
The rhythms used in this samba include quarter note (crotchet), eighth note (quaver), quarter rest (crotchet rest) and ties for simple syncopation.
The slideshow is included in both PowerPoint and Google Slides versions.
Teacher instructions talk you through how to teach the samba piece and then how to perform it.
Depending on your pupils’ ability, this piece should take around 20-30 minutes to learn. You can make it last a whole lesson by swapping groups round and doing a couple of full performances!
