Year 9 History/RE Lesson: Blame and Justice – The Holocaust and What Came After
This lesson explores how the world responded to the Holocaust through denazification, the Nuremberg Trials, and later prosecutions like the trial of Adolf Eichmann. Pupils learn about the role of ordinary people in atrocities, how justice was pursued after 1945, and why public trials were important for establishing truth and accountability. Activities include guided reading on Police Battalion 101, analysing quotes from Eichmann, comprehension questions, and extended writing on whether following orders can ever excuse crimes against humanity.
Learning aims:
Describe how denazification tried to remove Nazi influence from Germany
Explain why the Nuremberg Trials were a turning point in international justice
Reflect on the significance of the Eichmann trial for Holocaust memory
Evaluate whether ordinary people can be held responsible for atrocities
Includes PowerPoint slides (school logos have been removed from the PPT), comprehension tasks, source analysis, and structured writing activities ready to teach.
