5 in a Row 鈥 Subitizing Match Game

This interactive and strategic game is designed to help young learners develop and reinforce their subitising skills鈥攊nstantly recognising small quantities without counting. Perfect for pairs, this activity turns number recognition into a fun and competitive challenge.

How to play: Children take turns selecting a number card (numbers 1鈥6) in their designated colour鈥攔ed or blue. To place their number on the game board, they must correctly match it to one of the visual representations shown (dice patterns). Each player starts with 15 coloured number cards, making it easy to track who placed which numbers.

The goal is to get five in a row鈥攈orizontally, vertically, or diagonally鈥攂y correctly matching numbers to their visual forms. The game encourages quick thinking, number fluency, and visual recognition, while also promoting turn-taking and strategic thinking.

This resource is ideal as a warm-up, maths centre activity, or a fun end-of-lesson game to reinforce early number sense in a meaningful way.
