A detailed study of how Hurricane Katrina in 2004 caused devastation to the city of New Orleans and the surrounding area. This version does not link to specific GCSE Syllabi and so can be used more flexibly. Plenty of supporting resources with scaffolding sheets to allow students to build up case study/ example knowledge. Covers the cause, impacts and responses. Homework materials also included.
This lesson looks at how CO2 can be reduced so that the impacts of future climate change can be reduced. It considers carbon capture, tree planting, international agreements and alternative energy resources. Includes an active starter activity to engage the students immediately, video links, as well as support activity sheets to summarise the key learning or support weaker students. Differentiated exam questions are also included. The lesson makes reference to the Hodder or Oxford textbooks for the main activity as the exam board have specified the content, but other sources would work just as well.
As a thank-you for leaving a review, please choose another single resource for free from my shop, either PM me or use e-mail (see the last slide of the power-point).
This lesson concentrates on the wide range of evidence available for climate change. It covers the historical evidence, glacial retreat, ice cores, direct temperature readings through to recent changes in sea ice coverage. It is designed to be used with the Oxford Textbook with a graphic organiser linked to the double-page spread but plenty of video links are included for variety and the book is not necessary. but other sources can be used instead. A range of options is included to cover the material, depending on the sources available. A graphic organiser has been kept relatively generic to allow for a variety of texts/sources to be used but it is ideal if using the Oxford Textbook. Differentiated questions have also been included.
Two complete lessons that cover this topic. The power-point covers the key concepts with clear diagrams and video links. Also included are worksheets that cover the 3 cell model formation and how high and low pressure is linked to climate at the equator, the deserts and the UK. Key concepts covered are: the 3 cell model, air pressure, surface winds, convection and the Coriolis effect. Jet Streams and their role are also covered. The lesson can be used as a standalone resource with enough material for 2 lessons or to supplement textbook material.
A complete lesson based on the issue of food miles. Includes a power-point with definitions, video links and clear objectives. Activity sheets can be used to collect the key information from the Oxford Textbook. It also include exam style questions to cover the assessment objectives.
A lesson that looks at the issues surrounding rapid population growth. It uses the older version of the Oxford Textbook. Also includes an exam assessment with mark scheme.
A fully resourced lesson that covers the structure and development of hurricanes. Designed for the AQA 9-1 Course. Differentiated objectives are linked to numerical levels. Teacher notes are included for each slide with suggestions on possible approaches. The emphasis is on getting students to engage with the activities and demonstrate understanding.Resource sheets include differentiated activities and allow students to consolidate their learning. The power-point makes some references to the Oxford GCSE Text but I have included alternative resources on the slides so that they can be used without a textbook
Update your case study for hurricanes. A collection of resources that cover the content required to for the AQA 9-1 GCSE. The distribution and development of tropical storms is investigated with a variety of activities to support students and then the case study is explored. Finally policies to reduce the effects of tropical storms are explored. Included are video links, support sheets and examination questions to allow for a variety of approaches. Power-points can be used as standalone lessons but the resources complement the new Oxford Textbook. A comprehensive Knowledge Organiser has been added meaning that no textbook is needed.
A straightforward lesson that provides students with templates to collect the notes from the old Oxford AQA Textbook. Also included are two exam style questions which are self contained. Whilst the templates are designed to be used with the Oxford Book the assessments are self contained and can be used without any book resource.
A complete lesson that covers the description and interpretation of population pyramids. Objectives are linked to the demands of the new GCSE AQA 9-1 Syllabus. It is a fully resourced standalone lesson but follows on from the demographic transition lesson. No other resources are required and worksheets of up to date pyramids for annotation are included. I have also included a past exam question. Aimed at GCSE, this would also be suitable for KS3 as the activities can differentiate by outcome.
Three resources that comprehensively cover the introduction to any population or demographics course.
1. World Population Growth and Exponential Growth.
2. The Demographic Transition Model (Carousel Activity)
3. Interpreting Population Pyramids.
A complete lesson that covers the description and interpretation of population pyramids.
A fully resourced lesson that explores the DTM in an active way. Written specifically for the AQA GCSE 9-1 course and fully updated. The power-point covers the key definitions and includes video links. The main activity is a market place/carousel task in which the students move around the room collecting the information for each stage. The information sheets are in colour for high impact and would benefit from laminating to ensure they can be reused year after year. The syllabus refers to Nigeria but the pyramid is only just entering stage 3 so I have also included Brazil, as it shows the difference from stage 2 far more clearly. The information makes references to policies in Nigeria as it is used as a case study elsewhere in the course.

The main activity is a market place/carousel activity in which the students move around the room collecting the information for each stage. The information sheets are in colour for high impact and would benefit from laminating to ensure they can be reused. The data uses pyramids from the CIA website. Designed to meet the demands of the 9-1 GCSE but suitable for KS3.
An introductory lesson to the topic of population. Written for GCSE but suitable for KS3. Covers the key definitions, exponential growth and looks at how data can be represented in maps and diagrams. Video links included to illustrate the key themes. No textbook necessary as this is a standalone resource but the notes make references to the Oxford Textbook.
Written specifically for the AQA 9-1 GCSE Geography Course but applicable to all relevant syllabi. An introductory lesson on the causes of climate change. Includes physical causes in the Quaternary Period as well human causes more recently. It is designed to be used with the Oxford Textbook but other sources can be used instead. Covers orbital changes, volcanic activity, sunspots, carbon emissions, nitrous oxides and methane.
This is a 40 mark assessment that covers the tectonic hazards section of the new AQA GCSE course. It should last an hour. The exam questions follow the new assessment style but I have simplified the multi- choice questions to reduce photocopying costs. A 9 mark 'assess' extended response question is included to allow access to the highest grades. Also included is a full mark scheme.
A KS3 version of the GCSE resource available elsewhere. This has been simplified . The objectives link to the new 1-9 GCSE Levels but stop at Level 6. Therefore it can be used comfortably with Year 8 and 9 groups. It covers reducing the risk of hurricanes by prediction, protection and planning.
A fully resourced lesson that addresses how to reduce the effects of hurricanes. Lesson is good to go with no additional resources required. The Power-point has differentiated objectives linked to the new levels. Teacher notes are included on the slides. It uses Bangladesh and the USA as examples with the use of public information films and hurricane shelters. A photo annotation task is also included. Suitable for all new GCSE specifications but written for the AQA syllabus.
