This resource is designed to give year 6 teachers an idea of their children’s current ability across the four operations. Particularly useful as a September tool to highlight strengths and areas for development and pin-point future teaching and interventions. Sheet includes basic addition and subtraction, short multiplication and division and some algebra and basic fraction conversion work. Answers are provided for ease of marking.

An Elicitation Task for year 6s to determine children’s current understanding before embarking on a teaching sequence. Questions relevant to SAT arithmetic test and also incorporates word problems that require working out percentages. Answers are included for ease of marking and a matching assessment task is also available on TES Resources.

Three problems based on Santa’s Sleigh that include: volume surface area lengths in metres Four operations required to solve the problems: multiplication (short and long) long division addition/subtraction Answers are included for ease of marking.

Three way differentiated task on calculating the area of parallelograms and triangles. One star sheet - Handling of triangle and quadrilateral areas using simpler numbers. Two star sheet - Handling of triangle and parallelogram areas where long multiplication will need to be applies - also touches on splitting whole numbers. Three star sheet - Larger areas and numbers to be handled and problems that require reasoning and working systematically.

A3 sized worksheet incorporating elicitation task that covers the following learning objectives: Can I identify the properties of a circle? Can I calculate the area of a rectangle, triangle and parallelogram? Can I calculate missing angles? Can I calculate the volume of a cuboid? Can I calculate with square and cubed numbers?

A worksheet to monitor children’s capability and understanding in using the four operations with both simple and mixed fractions. If you’ve also downloaded the elicitation task, it can be a very useful tool to highlight the progress the children are making throughout your schemes of work. Answers are included with the worksheet for ease of marking.

Exercises involving fractions of numbers (e.g. 2/5 of 240) that can first be discussed as a class leading into paired work. The powerpoint discusses the formulas used for working out fractions of numbers and also touches on the point that, when dealing with fractions, X and OF mean the same thing. To finish with, plenary-wise, there is a task that children can complete (either in pairs or individually) geared to their level confidence at this particular point. Together with good quality questioning, this should prove to be useful resource across Key Stage 2 (particularly in Years 5/6).
