Why do so many people gather each year to remember the dead? Let’s find out.

This reading comprehension pack introduces pupils to remembrance festivals around the world, including Halloween, Día de los Muertos, Obon, and Pitru Paksha. With three clearly differentiated reading texts (Starter, Standard, and Stretch), learners move from simple retrieval to deeper analysis. Early texts support sequencing, vocabulary, and comparison, while the most advanced encourages inference, tone, and author’s intent.
Across all versions, readers explore how different cultures remember those who have died. They discover that Halloween began in Ireland with Samhain, where people lit fires and wore costumes. They learn how Día de los Muertos uses candles, marigolds, and food to celebrate loved ones, and how Obon and Pitru Paksha involve lanterns, prayers, and shared meals to remember ancestors. Although each tradition is unique, the message is the same: remembrance matters.

What’s included:

  • Three black-and-white reading texts (Starter, Standard, Stretch)
  • Matching comprehension questions for each level
  • Skill-tagged answer keys for quick marking
  • Traffic light self-assessment system built in

From flickering lanterns to shared family stories, help your learners explore how people around the world keep memories alive!
