Word Class Quiz-Quiz-Trade Cards
(Targeted at Years 4, 5, and 6)

These cards are designed to help pupils consolidate their understanding of key word classes, including adjectives, noun phrases, conjunctions, determiners, prepositions, adverbs and verbs.

How to use:

1. Each pupil receives a card with a question and answer printed side-by-side. 2. Pupils move around the room and pair up with a partner.
2. Pupil A reads their question aloud to Pupil B, who attempts to answer it.
3. Pupil A uses the answer printed on their card to check, correct or guide if needed.
4. Then, Pupil B reads their question to Pupil A, following the same process.
5. After both have had a turn, they swap cards and move on to a new partner.

As pupils repeat this process, they become increasingly confident and fluent, reinforcing key terminology and grammar through repetition and peer discussion.

This is a fantastic formative assessment strategy (AfL), perfect as a starter, mid-lesson activity, or plenary. It promotes movement, inclusion, and purposeful talk. The activity is accessible for all, including Widgit-supported cards for EAL learners, and empowers all pupils to “sound like experts” in a lively, engaging format.
