The Secret in the Garden – Fiction Reading Comprehension (Years 5 & 6)

This engaging reading comprehension resource is based on the classic story The Secret Garden, aimed at students in Years 5 and 6. It encourages students to apply a range of VIPERS reading skills (Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval, and Summarising) to deepen their understanding of the text. The questions are designed to challenge and develop students’ ability to engage with and analyse fiction.

As an extension, there is a creative writing task at the end where students can use their imagination and story-writing skills to envision what lies behind the mysterious door in the garden. A story checklist is included to guide their creative process and ensure they apply key writing techniques. This resource offers a fun and enriching way for students to build both their reading and writing skills.
