This lesson helps pupils in Years 1–2 identify and describe similarities and differences between shops today and in the past. Pupils will explore how shopping has changed over time and consider reasons for these changes. Ideal for history or local studies topics, this lesson supports observation, comparison, and discussion skills.

What’s included:
✔ PowerPoint showing shops from the past and present
✔ Two local area maps (modern and blank for past shops)
✔ Word mat with different types of shops
✔ Lesson plan with starter, main activity, differentiation, and plenary

Lesson structure:
★ Starter – Introduce modern shopping items and discuss where pupils buy them. Compare with a 1950s shop photograph and prompt observations.
★ Main Activity – Explore changes in shops using the PowerPoint and a timeline of key developments. Pupils work in groups to compare modern and past maps of their local area, adding past shops with drawings or labels. Differentiation provided with a word bank and extension notes for older pupils.
★ Plenary – Share findings and discuss the biggest differences between shops past and present. Use photos for pupils to identify whether they are from the past or present and explain reasoning.

Why it’s useful:
✔ Supports observation, comparison, and discussion skills
✔ Differentiated tasks for varying ability levels
✔ Encourages local history connections and group work
✔ Can be adapted for visitor input or multimedia use

Suggested use cases:
Ideal for KS1 history lessons, local area studies, comparing past and present, group discussions, and map-based activities. Suitable for Years 1–2.
