Here’s a fun and educational “Push Toy Take-Apart Lab” Perfect for a STEM or physics class. It supports hands-on learning, engineering thinking, and physical science concepts like force, motion, and simple machines. It is always one of my favorite lessons of the year.
Objectives
Disassemble a push toy to identify internal mechanisms.
Describe how forces cause motion.
Identify simple machines within the toy (wheels and axles, springs, gears).
Make claims supported by evidence about how the toy’s design affects its movement.
Force & Motion Discussion:
Relate parts to physical science concepts: potential and kinetic energy, friction, force, and motion.
Student question-can you take apart a toy car and put it back together, so it works?
Science engineering physics, mechanics,
Science concepts Machines form and function process

· MS-PS2-2: Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces.
· MS-ETS1-2: Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process.
· MS-PS3-2: Develop a model to describe the conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy.
