This version of One Thousand is an update of the variant that has been in circulation for some time (the ‘Classic Version’). Nine integers between 1 and 6 inclusive are generated one at a time for the player to put in a grid representing three 3-digit numbers, the goal being to make those three numbers add to 1,000.

Whereas the Classic Version frequently generates number sets for which a total of 1,000 is impossible, the number sets generated by this version will always have a solution.

It is also possible to switch to playing the Classic Version if desired. This gives teachers and learners the opportunity to discuss why it is possible to discern that a solution is not possible even before a game is finished, for example, when more than three sixes are rolled.
